The Maine Gear Library Network exists to share resources and knowledge in order to grow equitable and low-barrier access to outdoor gear for communities across the state.

Gear libraries statewide:

The Maine Gear Library Network is a growing coalition of community organizations working together to make outdoor adventures more accessible, affordable, and sustainable.

From tents and backpacks to snowshoes and kayaks, gear libraries around the state are helping more people get outside, regardless of income, experience, or zip code. By sharing resources and knowledge, the Maine Gear Library Network is building a culture of collaboration and sharing, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to explore and enjoy Maine’s incredible natural places.

What is a Gear Library?

A gear library is a community-powered lending program that provides low-cost access to outdoor equipment, such as kayaks, bikes, backpacks, snowshoes, and more. Their models may differ, but these gear libraries share a common goal of supporting equitable access to the outdoors by removing the barrier of gear ownership, inviting more Mainers to connect with nature.

Why should I borrow instead of buy?

Borrowing outdoor gear instead of buying it creates powerful ripple effects across our communities. It reduces waste and overconsumption, keeping gear in use and out of landfills. It makes outdoor adventures more accessible by lowering the cost of participation—especially for those who might not have the resources to buy their own equipment. It helps families, educators, and youth leaders get outside safely and confidently, even without prior experience.

Borrowing also encourages people to try new activities without a big financial commitment, supporting healthier, more active lifestyles. On a larger scale, it builds a sense of community and shared responsibility. Every borrowed tent or backpack represents a shift toward a more sustainable, inclusive, and connected way of enjoying Maine’s incredible outdoors.

Who is allowed to borrow gear?

Different gear libraries have different membership models: some are free, some offer low-cost rentals, and others partner with local libraries and community organizations. But no matter the model, the goal is the same: to make sure everyone has access to the gear they need to explore Maine’s outdoors.

Whether you’re planning your first family camping trip, need extra gear to take your friends cross-country skiing, or just want to try something new, your local gear library is here to help.
